Living Room Decorating! Read This Before You Start Out

When it comes to living room decorating there are many styles one can choose from. There are hundreds, if not thousands of options in terms of carpet alone. Maybe you want to go with hardwood, or be adventurous, and try stained concrete. Whatever the case, each element of a living room goes into the overall living room decorating plan that is set in motion when one moves into a home, or renovates his, or her living room.

The best way to implement a living room decorating concept is to research the purpose of the room. The purpose of your living room is for most a place of sanctuary, where one can kick back in the recliner, with a cold beverage, and enjoy a ball game, or movie. For others the living room can be a virtual office, in the days of wireless internet, and laptop computers, living room decorating must consider these things. Whatever the use is for your living room, try locating it before you do any living room decorating, in order to fully adorn the room with functional decorations.

A function decoration is one that serves a purpose beyond accenting a rooms looks. Some living room decorating experts utilize this on a daily basis. In fact, many interior decorators make this the fundamental premise behind all their work. A living room decorating plan that implements at least some functional elements will greatly assist those enjoying the room on a regular basis.

The most common functional elements found when living room decorating is occurring are old wood tables being used as desks, a piece of a sail boat converted into a coffee table, or even a fancy piece of art, that happens to be a clock. These are your common, run of the mill functional design elements. There are plenty of others worth a try as well.

One can utilize all types of materials to make functional design elements. For my living room I wanted an industrial look, so I went with metal as my core material. I was able to have a metal breakfast bar created for less than three thousand dollars. The bar is covered with a custom piece of glass, and adds a modern pop to any living room.

Your challenge is to find what you like to do in a living room, and try to incorporate it into your design. Once you do this, your living room will not only be beautiful, but also functional.

How to Create a Rustic Living Room Decor

Most people do not want to spend a lot of time decorating any certain room in the house. If you want to create a quick look in your living room that is rustic and inexpensive, then consider these tips to help you. Remember that rustic is comfortable and simple, not distracting and uncomfortable.

You know that you like the rustic look but there is a variety of rustic looks to choose from. Picking your style may be hard to do but it will be worth the added time you put into the room. Antique items are the most popular ways to get a rustic look. You may have inherited some old things that you don’t know what to do with and you may consider throwing them out. However, you may want to think about how you can incorporate them into your decor. Rustic doesn’t have a set pattern or color as long as you make everything blend together.

The flooring needs to be hardwood. If you don’t already have hardwood flooring you may want consider placing hardwood flooring down in your living room. This is a big expense but it has so many advantages. If you have hardwood flooring but you have covered it up all these years with carpet, get rid of the carpet and have the floors buffed and re-stained to get a new look in your living room. Complete this look with floral rugs that you can use in front of the sofa and chairs. Use solid color rugs in front of the television, bookshelf, and fireplace to highlight these areas.

The walls should be decorated with either paint of wallpaper. Some may find that wallpaper can give the rustic look more then simply painting the walls. If you don’t like painting or would rather not paint if you have the option, the find a wallpaper that you like at your local store or you can find the right one online.

Now may be a good time to change the furniture to create a rustic look. The furniture needs to match but other then that it should be older then what you have now. You want to also keep the room simple so don’t add too many pieces of furniture or it will seem more overcrowded.

Accessorize the rustic look with throws, sofa pillows, lamps, and more. These accessories can be very inexpensive and may require only a simple white blanket and two sofa pillows. Be creative but conservative. Try finding a southwestern blanket to place on the back of the sofa or folded up on an ottoman near your sofa so you can reach for it whenever you begin to feel cold.

You want to finish your look with some simple touch ups. Place a couple of logs in the fire so that you can light it when guests arrive. You may also want to light it when you want to snuggle up on the sofa. Your rustic look will be warm and inviting to everyone.

The Importance Of Themes In Living Room Decorating

What exactly is a theme? To make things simple let’s put it this way. A theme is nothing but a group of design elements combined together and given a name.

Some of the common theme names we have heard are

1) Contemporary theme

2) Oriental theme

3) Country theme

etc..

So a theme includes elements of decorating that are responsible for a drastic change in any given interior space. What these elements can be? A theme might include colors, finishes, textures, specific
shapes to be used, budget restrictions, or even a material of only by a particular manufacturer.

Such a group of design elements when combined together gives birth to a “theme”. It is perfectly possible to add, delete, modify, alter, replace any one or all the elements in this theme. It all depends
on what you like/dislike.

For example If I say that a “contemporary design theme” does nor or should not include a specific color for ceiling in the living room, you have total right to modify the above statement and make your
own depending upon what you like/dislike. SO any design theme is always evolving and you can use “creativity” to give birth to new themes.

But what about the themes that are already existing?

1) Contemporary design theme:

In these type of designs much emphasis is given on “simplicity” and straight lines and forms. this type theme says that a square in it self is a beautiful and “balanced” entity hence most design elements
in this theme are simple forms made of straight lines.

Also plain colors with their shades are used to create a “play” of light and shadows.

2) Oriental design theme:

In these type of design majority of surfaces are treated for “relief work” such as textured plasters with heavy decorating, wallpapers, with decorating prints of natural elements such as leaves, flowers,
scenery. Surfaces are treated as a way of expression.

3) Country design theme:

In this theme more and more natural elements are used for creating furniture and other elements. that’s why more country houses have wooden furniture, wooden flooring, shutters, ceiling made of wood etc.

So wood is used as a major language of expression.

While selecting theme for your living room it is necessary to first analyze what you like most and the budget criteria. Once this has been defined finding design elements that fits your design theme is
relatively easy. But one thing must be kept in mind that a living room is the face of your home. Once you decide or finalize the theme for your living room, it becomes almost necessary to use the same theme for rest of the room.

Of course this is not an absolute rule ,but keeping a common theme for your entire home helps to maintain a visual balance.

I hope this article was helpful to everyone.
